4 Things to Consider Before Changing Career Industries

Written by Alyssia Jones M.A.

I work with a lot of different people when it comes to resume writing and portfolio building. Often times I do get those individuals that decide they want to venture off to other industries outside of what they have already done (which by the way is such a bold move to do!). However, it is important to note a few things when considering other career paths.

  1. Time is one factor to consider when changing industries of work, especially when if the job requires more education than the current role that you are in at the moment. It is always good to read the job requirements of roles that pique your interest. Some questions to ask yourself while researching:

    • Does the role require a degree?

    • What about certification?

    • Would you consider spending more time in school for these requirements?

  2. Investments ties in with my previous point when it comes to education. inevitably, anyone that plans to change industries will be investing time, resources, and of course, money. If you are someone that doesn’t have the responsibilities of supporting a family or a household, this may be an easier adjustment for those individuals. For those that are supporting more than just themselves, it is good to consider the odds of making such a transition and asking yourself:

    • Will this investment support my household and family expenses?

    • How can I balance my current responsibilities while making these transitions?

    • Who will be able to help me support while investing my time while making these adjustments to my career?

  3. Guidance will also help with transitioning from one industry to another. Finding someone to sponsor you in the field of interest benefits in many different ways:

    • Helps with networking

    • Understanding the industry’s lifestyle

    • Ensures you are on the right path towards your goals

    • Ignites motivation to keep going, which leads to…

  4. Consistency; because once you start this journey you cannot stop! There will be challenges to face and growing pains to experience through your journey of building your career. The most important takeaway to understand about making changes in your life is to keep going and stay consistent.

Career development is a process that continues to grow. Although everyone has their reasons, I am proud to see candidates that decide to make such a transition on their own. This type of dedication comes with courage and discipline and is not for the weak! It pleases me to service candidates that want better, and look for ways to expand their career options.

This blog piece is dedicated to all of the candidates that I have worked with thus far that have successfully went through the process of making this great change.
